Applied Materials Process Diagnostics and Control business unit was created in Israel through Applied’s 1997 acquisition of the two Israeli companies - Orbot and Opal. In 1999 the company moved to its current facility in the Rehovot science park, not far from the Weizmann Institute, where it houses the nearly 1000 people. At Rechovot, sophisticated facilities support the life cycle of the product – from marketing to R&D to manufacturing, including a large cleanroom space, complying with the stringent requirement of the semiconductor industry.

In Israel, Applied Materials develops, manufactures, markets and supports process diagnostics and control equipment designed for semiconductor processes. It serves the metrology and inspection (M&I) market, estimated at $ 4.7 B in 2014 . Applied’s Israel-based products address four major segments: Lithography metrology; Optical Patterned Wafer Inspection; E-beam Patterned Wafer Inspection, and Defect Review & Classification. These tools are used in all phases of chip making, from process development, through process ramp, to volume manufacturing, and are used to analyze defectivity mechanisms, control the process stability and diagnose its failures thus ensuring maximum wafer output yield.
